RULAND®: Innovation in Elastomeric Couplings
01/11/2024
Ruland has recently expanded its range of zero-backlash elastomeric couplings, introducing versions with larger bores to meet the needs of applications requiring high torque, now available up to 45 mm and with transmissible torques up to 300 Nm. These couplings are ideal for precision systems with rapid acceleration and braking dynamics, such as those used in the semiconductor, solar energy, transportation, and warehouse automation sectors.
These couplings, also known as jaw couplings, are distinguished by their zero play and excellent ability to compensate for misalignments, surpassing industry standards. The balanced design helps reduce vibrations even at high speeds, up to 8,000 RPM, ensuring optimal performance in complex conditions.

Joint composition
These couplings consist of two precisely machined aluminum hubs and an elastomeric spider, the flexible element that connects the two hubs. The unique design of the hub teeth, with a rounded profile, ensures a perfect fit for the spider, guaranteeing zero-play operation. The spider is made from high-performance polyurethane, a material that dampens torque spikes and reduces shock loads transmitted to the motor and sensitive components.
Key benefits:
- Larger bores up to 45 mm: for applications with transmissible torques up to 300 Nm.
- Zero play (zero-backlash): essential for precision applications.
- Structural balancing: reduces vibrations at high speeds (up to 8,000 RPM).
- Various spider hardnesses: available in three durometers (85, 92, and 98 Shore A) to suit different damping and torsional stiffness needs.
- Ease of replacement: the spider is designed as the wear element, making replacement simple and cost-effective without compromising overall performance.

The material used for the two hubs is North American aluminum, which ensures lightweight construction and low moment of inertia. The hub configurations offer great flexibility, including versions with clamp locking, with or without keyways. Additionally, the couplings comply with RoHS3 and REACH regulations, ensuring environmental and social safety standards.
