RODOBAL® Plain Bearing or Rolling Bearing: Which Solution Should You Choose?
04/09/2026
RODOBAL® rod ends are generally used to transmit oscillating and rotary movements while allowing for the compensation of different angular misalignments. The Getecno range includes solutions with a plain bearing design as well as the RFR and RMR rolling bearing series, developed for applications requiring different dynamic characteristics. The choice between the two technologies therefore depends on the operating conditions of the component and, in particular, on the type of load and movement involved.
RODOBAL® Plain Bearing: A Solution for Demanding Applications
In traditional RODOBAL® versions, movement takes place through a spherical plain bearing arrangement. The bearing is preloaded to keep play to a minimum during operation, an important feature in applications where precise motion transmission is required. The range includes several configurations, from standard versions to high- and extra-high-strength models, as well as stainless steel versions and maintenance-free versions with a PTFE anti-friction liner. Versions designed for lubrication are also available.
This solution is particularly suitable when the rod end has to operate under demanding conditions. Getecno recommends plain bearing versions in the presence of high static loads, shocks or intense vibrations, conditions in which the bearing’s ability to distribute stresses contributes to the service life of the component
RODOBAL® Rolling Bearing: When Speed and Smoothness Matter
The RFR and RMR series, on the other hand, feature a rolling bearing arrangement based on a double row of balls. By reducing sliding contact, this solution achieves extremely low friction, together with low breakaway torque and smoother movement. These characteristics make this configuration particularly suitable for applications in which speed and dynamic performance play an important role.
Component maintenance has also been considered in the design of the RFR and RMR series: the rod ends are pre-lubricated and fitted with stainless steel side seals that protect the bearing arrangement from contaminants. For more demanding applications, re-lubrication is also possible.
Plain Bearings and Rolling Bearings Compared
The comparison between the two solutions is therefore primarily a matter of operating conditions. When an application involves high static loads or is subject to intense shocks and vibrations, RODOBAL® plain bearing rod ends represent the solution recommended by Getecno. Conversely, when operation requires fast movements, reduced friction and particularly smooth motion, the RFR and RMR rolling bearing series have been developed to meet these requirements.
The choice is therefore not simply between a more traditional technology and a more recent one, but rather about identifying the operating principle best suited to the task the rod end is required to perform. Loads, speed and the dynamic conditions of the application are all factors that should be considered when selecting the most appropriate configuration.
How to Identify the Right Solution?
RODOBAL® plain bearing rod ends and the RFR/RMR rolling bearing series meet different requirements and can be used in different application contexts. The former are also suitable for conditions involving high static loads, shocks and vibrations, while the latter focus primarily on low friction, smooth operation and high-speed performance.
Choosing the most suitable solution therefore starts with the actual operating conditions. These are the factors that should guide the selection of the RODOBAL® rod end best suited to the requirements of the application.
