Maintenance-Free RODOBAL®: When Lubrication Is Not Required

16/09/2026

Rod ends must ensure precise movement even when subjected to oscillation, rotation and varying angular misalignment. Depending on their design and operating conditions, the spherical bearing arrangement may require periodic lubrication or may be designed to operate without greasing. Within the RODOBAL® range, Getecno offers both solutions, including several versions with a PTFE anti-friction liner and permanent lubrication.

Lubrication and Rod End Operation

In RODOBAL® steel/bronze versions, the sliding spherical bearing arrangement is designed for lubrication through DIN 6405D grease fittings and/or lubrication grooves. This configuration allows the component to be lubricated during operation, maintaining the conditions required by the bearing arrangement. The range includes standard, high-strength and extra-high-strength versions, depending on the application requirements.

There are also applications where reducing or eliminating maintenance operations is an important requirement. In these cases, a maintenance-free rod end uses a different design principle: an anti-friction material is positioned between the spherical inner ring and the bushing, allowing the component to operate without additional grease.

The Role of PTFE in Maintenance-Free Versions

In maintenance-free RODOBAL® versions, the anti-friction liner consists of a bronze wire structure impregnated with PTFE. The liner provides permanent lubrication, so no initial or in-service greasing is required.

The absence of external lubrication also affects the design of the rod end. There is no need for a grease fitting or the corresponding hole in the body, which Getecno notes would otherwise reduce the load capacity of the component. The sliding spherical bearing arrangement is also preloaded, providing very low play and helping prevent an increase in play during operation.

The maintenance-free range is not limited to a single configuration. It includes standard, high-strength and extra-high-strength versions, as well as high-strength stainless steel variants and solutions for motorsport applications. This makes it possible to combine maintenance-free operation with different mechanical and environmental requirements

When Maintenance-Free Operation Becomes an Advantage

A maintenance-free rod end is particularly interesting when access to the component makes periodic servicing difficult, or when the design calls for a reduction in maintenance operations throughout the service life of the machine. The advantage is therefore not limited to eliminating the time required for greasing, but also concerns the integration of the component into systems where routine maintenance needs to be kept to a minimum.

The choice can also depend on the operating environment. Getecno offers stainless steel maintenance-free RODOBAL® versions for applications where corrosion resistance is important. In these configurations, the use of a PTFE anti-friction liner combines maintenance-free operation with materials designed for demanding environmental conditions.

A Solution Based on Operating Conditions

The difference between a lubricatable rod end and a maintenance-free version is therefore not simply the presence or absence of a grease fitting. The bearing arrangement, component design and way in which wear is managed during operation are also different.

For this reason, the design of a mechanical system should consider loads, movement, operating environment and maintenance requirements together. The RODOBAL® range includes both lubricatable and maintenance-free configurations, making it possible to match the rod end design to the actual operating conditions of the application.
